In recent years, the training sector has witnessed the development of new technologies. This advancement, combined with the increased availability of broadband internet connections, has fostered the growth of new educational tools, both for in-person teaching and distance learning.
Starting in 2009, an e-learning environment with its associated network infrastructure was piloted at the Naval Academy. This aimed to disseminate the service both within the Institute, as an aid to in-person teaching, and externally, as a tool for remote tutoring and collaboration for officer cadets.
Given the encouraging results achieved, a comprehensive project named DIONE was launched. Its purpose was to create an IT system to make e-learning activities available to all Italian Navy Training Institutes. Within this project, the Naval Academy assumed the role of Central Educational Hub, leading and coordinating the activities of the other Armed Forces Training Institutes.
As of December 2020, to enhance and optimize the previous setup and better address potential emergency situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, a single central platform for e-learning and educational support was launched. This platform is provided by the Italian Navy's Learning Service Providers (Training Institutes, Training Centers, and specialized Commands authorized to deliver courses), as per the following link.
This new IT solution, managed by the Schools Command with the support of the DIONE teams from the Training Institutes, will undergo continuous updates. Utilizing modern technologies, these updates will allow for increasingly tailored services and course content to meet the needs of individual users, for both basic and lifelong career training.
